This therapy, often categorized under the Swedana (fomentation/sudation) group, is a specialized Bruhana (nourishing/anabolic) procedure. It involves the application of a bolus (pinda) made from a specific variety of rice called Shashtika Shali, which is cooked with medicated milk and herbal decoctions. The therapeutic effect stems from the combined action of heat, medicinal properties of the ingredients, and mechanical stimulation. The Shashtika Shali is rich in antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals. Topically, their constituents are absorbed, aiding in collagen synthesis, improving skin elasticity, and reducing oxidative stress on keratinocytes and fibroblasts.
A highly revered Murdha Taila (application of oil on the head) therapy, Shirodhara involves the continuous and gentle pouring of a stream of medicated oil, buttermilk (Takra), or herbal decoction (Kashaya) over the forehead, specifically on the Ajna Chakra region, for a prescribed duration. The rhythmic and continuous flow stimulates afferent nerve endings in the forehead, leading to profound relaxation of the central nervous system (CNS). This process helps to downregulate the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis, reducing cortisol levels and mitigating the physiological effects of stress. The deep relaxation induces alpha and theta brainwave states, conducive to improved sleep architecture (REM and NREM sleep cycles), enhanced cognitive function (memory consolidation), and autonomic nervous system balance. The oleation also directly nourishes hair follicles, improving scalp health and reducing hair fall.
Panchakarma ("five actions") is a comprehensive set of five therapeutic purification procedures designed for deep internal cleansing and detoxification (Shodhana) of the body. It aims to eliminate accumulated toxins (Ama) and re-establish the equilibrium of the three Doshas (Vata, Pitta, Kapha). The specific procedures are chosen based on the individual’s Prakriti, Vikriti (current imbalances), and disease state.
Mechanism of Action: Panchakarma involves a three-stage process:
Poorvakarma (Pre-purification): Includes Snehana (internal and external oleation using medicated oils or ghee to mobilize toxins) and Swedana (therapeutic sweating to liquefy and dislodge toxins), Pradhanakarma (Main Purification) and Paschatkarma (Post-purification).
By systematically removing Ama from the Srotas (channels) and restoring cellular function, Panchakarma enhances metabolic efficiency, improves nutrient assimilation, strengthens the immune system (Vyadhikshamatva), and optimizes cellular regeneration. This deep detoxification significantly contributes to healthy ageing by reducing oxidative stress, mitigating chronic inflammation, and improving overall physiological resilience.
Nasya is a specialized Ayurvedic therapy involving the administration of medicated oils, herbal juices, or powders into the nasal passages. It is one of the five Panchakarma procedures, primarily targeting the Urdhwanga (head and neck region).
Nasya is highly effective for conditions related to the head, neck, and sensory organs, including chronic headaches, sinusitis, allergic rhinitis, improving clarity of sensory perceptions, and enhancing cognitive faculties like memory (Smriti). By promoting mental clarity and reducing brain fog, it contributes to a more youthful and alert mental state.
This therapy combines two potent Ayurvedic practices: Shiro Abhyanga (head massage) and Pada Abhyanga (foot massage), performed simultaneously or in sequence using warm medicated oils.
Massaging the scalp and forehead stimulates numerous Marma points (vital energy points) and nerve endings. The oleation nourishes hair follicles, improves local circulation, and induces a parasympathetic nervous system response, leading to deep relaxation, reduced anxiety, and mental calmness. It helps balance Prana Vayu and Sadhaka Pitta (which governs emotions and intellect) in the head. The synergistic effect of stimulating these key areas leads to profound mental peace, reduces nervous tension, and effectively combats insomnia (Anidra) by regulating sleep cycles. It improves overall energy flow (Prana) and alleviates fatigue, contributing to a sense of rejuvenation and well-being.
Food plays a vital role. Guests are served delicious, dosha-appropriate vegetarian and "Super Foods" prepared with fresh, seasonal ingredients, often sourced from the our own vegetable and herb garden. The cuisine promotes healthy eating habits and mindful consumption, which are key aspects of Ayurvedic healthy ageing. Alcohol and non-vegetarian food is not served
